Stunting:
Stunting affects children as a result of malnutrition in the first 1000 days of their lives, starting from being fetuses in their mother’s womb until the age of two years old, and causes them to have poor mental and physical growth that makes them short in stature and they face difficulties in education. Stunting can be cured before the age of two years with proper nutritional food.
What are the main causes of stunting?
Stunting problems result
1- During the mother’s pregnancy due to malnutrition, lack of vitamins, zinc, calcium, iodine, and high blood pressure in the mother
2- After childbirth and during the lactation period due to food insecurity and malnutrition of the newborn mother – lack of interest in breastfeeding – inability to visit health units
The impact of stunting on the individual and the family:
• Poor health of the child and prone to diseases.
• predisposition to chronic diseases later in life.
• Increasing family spending on health care.
• Delayed mental development that affects academic achievement and getting a good job opportunity in the future.
• Reduces the potential for per capita income by 10-20%.
